There are several misconceptions around the Chihuahua breed. While most people consider them to be weak, fragile, and feeble hearted dogs, the reality is the opposite. Chihuahuas are friendly and stable dogs who do not feel scared easily and will happily go with you on a camping trip if required. They are not scared of changes and are, in fact, very adaptable.

Another debate around Chihuahua is their origin. Their homeland has been up for debate for a very long time. It is believed that Chihuahua is a native of Mexico and experts have theorized that the breed could have been brought by the Spanish conquistadors from the island of Malta. Whereas a few other experts are of the opinion that this breed originated in China. A strange speculation around them is that they may be related to Chipmunks.

All in all, Chihuahuas are great family pets and are very loving. They like to be treated with respect. However, they might snap at strangers who seem like a threat or are diminutive to their size. This breed is extremely intelligent and even loyal to their owners. They like human company and are affectionate.

Temperament

However, they do not respond very well to extreme coddling. This breed is prone to separation anxiety. They are happiest when they are with the people they love. This breed is suitable for households where there is always someone around and they are not left alone for long hours.

It is very important to socialize with your Chihuahua. If you don’t, they may become snappy and irritable towards strangers. They can also act very protective and vocal towards their owners.

These are energetic dogs who like to engage in various activities and enjoy playing with pet toys. They require a minimum of 30 minutes of regular exercise to be mentally stimulated.

They can have both long to short coats. The short coat Chihuahua has slightly different grooming needs as compared to the long-haired ones.
