Advocate is a monthly spot-on for dogs (10-25kg) that treats and prevents fleas, prevents heartworm disease, and treats and controls roundworms, hookworms and whipworms, plus certain mite infestations, in a single easy-to-apply dose.
Composition: Imidacloprid 10% w/v (a neonicotinoid insecticide) and Moxidectin 2.5% w/v (a macrocyclic lactone), in a 2.5ml pipette.
Indications: Flea infestation; heartworm disease prevention; roundworm, hookworm and whipworm infections; sarcoptic mange and demodicosis (mite infestations); ear mites.
Dosage: One 2.5ml pipette applied topically once a month, matched to the dog's 10-25kg weight band.
Directions for use: Part the fur at the base of the neck between the shoulder blades until the skin is visible, then apply the full pipette contents directly to the skin.
How does the medicine work? : Imidacloprid kills fleas by targeting nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in their nervous system; moxidectin is absorbed and distributed systemically, disrupting nerve signalling in heartworm larvae, mange mites and intestinal worms - together providing broad parasite coverage from a topical, non-absorbed (into the bloodstream) application.
Possible side effects: Rare skin sensitisation or transient reactions are possible. Moxidectin has been shown to be safe in Collie breeds, unlike some other macrocyclic lactones, but confirm with the vet if there is any known drug sensitivity.
