Itrapet 100mg is a gold-standard oral antifungal tablet used to treat systemic and skin fungal infections in dogs and cats, offering a broader spectrum and often shorter treatment course than older antifungals.
Composition: Each tablet contains 100mg Itraconazole.
Indications: Systemic fungal infections including Aspergillosis, Blastomycosis, Coccidioidomycosis, Cryptococcosis, Histoplasmosis, Pythiosis and Sporotrichosis; dermatophytosis (ringworm) and other fungal skin infections.
Dosage: Typically 5mg/kg body weight once daily, or as directed by the vet based on the specific fungal infection and its severity.
Directions for use: Can be given with or after food. Give at the same time each day for the full prescribed course.
How does the medicine work? : Itraconazole inhibits the enzymes responsible for producing ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell wall, weakening and killing the fungus without the same level of interference in mammalian cells.
Possible side effects: Mild vomiting, loss of appetite, or liver enzyme changes are possible on longer courses - the vet may recommend periodic liver-function monitoring for extended treatment.
