Nexgard is a monthly chewable flea and tick treatment for dogs weighing 10-25kg, killing fleas within hours and providing a full month of protection from a single palatable dose.
Composition: Each chewable tablet contains 68mg Afoxolaner, an isoxazoline-class parasiticide, dosed at a minimum of 2.5mg/kg body weight.
Indications: Flea infestation; tick infestation; prevention of tick fever.
Dosage: One chewable tablet once a month, matched to the dog's 10-25kg weight band. Weigh the dog accurately before administration.
Directions for use: Give with or after a meal. Most dogs accept it as a treat; watch for a few minutes to confirm the full tablet is swallowed.
How does the medicine work: Afoxolaner selectively inhibits GABA-gated and glutamate-gated chloride channels in the nervous systems of fleas and ticks, causing uncontrolled nerve activity and death, while having much lower affinity for the corresponding mammalian receptors
Possible side effects: Isoxazoline-class drugs (including afoxolaner) have been associated with neurologic adverse reactions such as tremors, ataxia and seizures, even in dogs without a prior seizure history - use with caution in dogs with a history of seizures or neurologic disorders. Safety in breeding, pregnant or lactating dogs has not been evaluated.
