Phosclear is a phosphorus binder used to manage hyperphosphatemia (elevated blood phosphorus) in dogs and cats with chronic kidney disease (CKD), helping reduce the risk of secondary hyperparathyroidism.
Composition: Aluminium Hydroxide Gel (dried, USP-grade) 250mg per level scoop.
Indications: Hyperphosphatemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) or renal insufficiency; supportive management of secondary hyperparathyroidism linked to CKD.
Dosage: Based on serum phosphorus level: 6-8mg/dl = 100mg/kg/day; 8-10mg/dl = 200mg/kg/day; above 10mg/dl = 300mg/kg/day. The total daily dose should be divided across feedings, as directed by the vet.
Directions for Use: Mix the powder into food, dividing the total daily dose across meals for oral administration only.
How does the medicine work?: Aluminium hydroxide binds dietary phosphorus in the gut, reducing the amount absorbed into the bloodstream, which helps lower serum phosphorus and reduce the ongoing stimulation of the parathyroid gland that drives secondary hyperparathyroidism in CKD.
Possible side effects: Contact the vet immediately in case of suspected overdose. Dogs and cats with CKD may need this as lifelong therapy, with regular monitoring of serum phosphorus.
