Diacool is used for the treatment and prevention of ulcers in the mouth, oesophagus, stomach and small intestine, combining a protective coating agent with a local anaesthetic to soothe and heal the digestive tract.
Composition: Sucralfate (forms a protective barrier over ulcerated tissue) and Oxetacaine (a local anaesthetic that calms the digestive tract).
Indications: Treatment and prevention of ulcers in the mouth, oesophagus, stomach and small intestine; prevention of drug- or chemical-induced stomach ulcers; relief of nausea and prevention of ulceration in puppies with parvovirus.
Dosage: Dogs: 5ml per 20kg body weight, twice daily. Cats: 0.5ml per 5kg body weight, twice daily, or as directed by the vet.
Directions for use: Give directly by oral syringe or mixed into a small amount of food, twice daily.
How does the medicine work? : Sucralfate binds to the ulcerated area, forming a protective coating that shields it from stomach acid while it heals, and works synergistically with oxetacaine, which locally anaesthetises and calms the irritated digestive tract.
Possible side effects: Generally well tolerated; give separately from other oral medications where possible, as sucralfate can interfere with the absorption of some other drugs - confirm timing with the vet if the pet is on other medication.
