Neomec is an Ivermectin-based tablet used to treat a wide range of internal and external parasites in dogs, including intestinal worms, mange, ear mites, and larval heartworm - it is not effective against ticks, fleas, or adult heartworms.
Composition: Each tablet contains 10mg Ivermectin.
Indications: Generalised demodicosis (mange); scabies; ear mites; larval heartworm (does not kill adult heartworms); mature and immature stages of common endoparasites such as roundworms, hookworms and whipworms.
Dosage: As recommended by the vet
Directions for use: Give directly (melt-in-mouth formulation) or mixed into food.
How does the medicine work: Ivermectin binds to glutamate-gated chloride channels in the nervous system of parasites, causing paralysis and death, while having a much lower affinity for the corresponding mammalian receptors at standard doses.
Possible side effects: This drug can affect the liver, so vets often recommend pairing it with a liver-support tonic. IMPORTANT: dogs with the MDR1 gene mutation (common in Collies, Shetland Sheepdogs, Australian Shepherds and related breeds) are highly sensitive to Ivermectin toxicity - confirm breed sensitivity with the vet before use, as overdose can cause tremors, ataxia and even death.
